The CDC Contraceptive Decision Making app helps providers explain options and walk through the decision-making process for a variety of contraceptive methods. The science behind these choices as well as the multitude of parameters makes the information that needs to be communicated both complex and technical in nature.
What we did
We conceptualized a multi-faceted and modular system to break the components up into smaller interconnected pieces of information. A combination of logic, taxonomies, and UI/IxD features make it so the app supports a variety of situations, mental models, and preferences.
Why it matters
Decisions about contraceptive are both highly individualized and personal. As providers discuss the options it’s key that the tool is highly flexible to account for this. The logic, taxonomies and overall content strategy support a conversational flow thathelps humanize the provider-patient interactions.
Full disclosure: the finalization and launch of the newly designed app is on hold because the team that was responsible for it was dismanteled during the 2025 DOGE purge.
