The challenge

The VA's AboutFace website provides Veterans, families, and clinicians with stories and resources about PTSD from people with lived experience. The site needed a redesign that prioritized Veterans' voices, made navigation more intuitive, and ensured accessibility and compliance with federal standards.

What we did

After conducting concept testing and user research, we reworked the information architecture to improve and simplify navigation and made the video interviews the main focus of the interface design. Inclusive design and accessibility are at the core of each decision we made — leaning heavily on what we learned from veterans through several rounds of usability testing.

As the UX lead, I designed task flows, redesigned the IA and navigation structure, and refocused the experience on the video testimonies at the heart of AboutFace. I was heavily involved in research at every stage, from drafting moderator's guides to developing recommendations from findings.

Why it matters

The specific challenges Veterans face make it hard to get the facts about PTSD, learn about treatment options, and figure out what their next steps might be. This website speaks to them in their voice. Through research and collaboration with veterans and clinicians, we greatly improved the user experience — and traffic and satisfaction scores improved as a result.
